It
is happening in West Bengal. After Wipro, IBM, Cisco and Microsoft,
now it is the turn of Tata Infotech. The IT education arm of Tata
Infotech, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited
(WEBEL), the nodal IT body of the state government to impart IT
training to the students of undergraduate colleges in the state.
Tata Infotech has already tied up the state government of Haryana
for a similar exercise.
Earlier,
WEBEL had tied up with IT major IBM Limited to impart IT training
in government and government-aided schools of the state. Rahul Thapan,
Head-Education Services Division of Tata Infotech informed Express
Computer, The company has already surveyed 50 colleges and
identified 20 in and around the city, where classes would begin
within the next couple of months. The IT training company
plans to introduce short-term IT courses in 70 colleges in the state
by the end of this fiscal year.
The
courses would be offered at a much lower price than the existing
course-fee structure. As per the terms of the agreement, Tata Infotech
would provide the hardware, software, course material and the faculty,
Thapan said. The concerned college authorities have to make provisions
for basic infrastructure like space and electricity, he added. WEBEL
would act as a co-ordinator and monitor the project.
The
state governments IT body has to market the programme and
bring more and more colleges under the programme. Initially, Tata
Infotech would invest to the tune of Rs 2 crore to put the hardware
and software in place.
The
courses would range from basic computer training for under-graduate
students to specialised IT training courses. The courses have been
structured into three modules introductory, intermediate and
advanced.
