The
first batch of students of the Institute of Technology for Women
(ITW), affiliated to SNDT University, were awarded their degrees
recently. The highlight being the fact that most of them were successful
in securing campus placements.
Established
in 1997 with the sole aim to empower women in the field of information
technology, the institution has gone through many phases of revamping.SNDT
has done pioneering work in the field of higher education for women,
and ITW is another feather in its cap. It is the great feeling of
contentment that propels me to do my best in introducing state-of-the-art
facilities, says Vikram Patil, incharge principal, ITW. He
adds, Our aim is to bring about an interface between academics
and industry, as well as a synergy between classroom projects and
industry projects, so that our students are better equipped to face
the challenges of the corporate world.
ITW
has tie-ups with major companies. AICT (All India Council of Technology
Education) under their CNANCE (Centre for National Academic Network
for Continuing Education) program has chosen SNDT as one of their
centres. Under this program, Sun Microsystems provides training
to two faculty members who in turn train the students. A tie-up
with Cisco Learning Academy is one of their major achievements.
The
students are evaluated on the basis of the grading point system,
which is practiced only in institutions like the IIT Powai. The
pass percentage this year was 98.4 percent, out of which 70 percent
were eligible for campus recruitment. Students have secured
placements in many prestigious software companies like i-flex solutions,
Hewlett Packard, Kale Consultants, Satyam Computer Services, Patni
Computer Services, etc, informs Prof Wilson Pinto.
Admission
to the various courses from other states have been very encouraging.
Being an all woman university, girls from other states are not hesitant
in joining us, says Prof Pinto. ITW now plans to provide hostel
facilities and also give all-round training in soft skills like
personality development, people management skills, etc. The Students
and Alumni Association (SAA) regularly organises technical workshops
and state-of-the-art courses.
