The
Computer Society of India is introducing a Web-assisted distance
education programme to help IT professionals gain new skill sets
at a time and pace convenient to them. Besides flexible timings
for study, the course also provides scope for interaction between
faculty and the students. The course can be accessed from a dedicated
site www.distanteducation.org. Those desirous of registering for
the course could also log on to the site and enroll.
The
first course being offered by CSI as part of this pioneering effort
is in the field of e-logistics. To make the course content dynamic,
CSI has entered into technical collaboration with Indian Logistics
Academy, pioneers in e-logistics in India.
The
decision to introduce a course in logistics was taken as several
forces have converged in the last few years to fundamentally transform
the way businesses operate, and enable the creation of powerful
new business models.
In
the new operating environment, executives are required to take difficult
decisions about the allocation of resources and make critical decisions
in response to challenges posed by electronic marketplaces. They
require entirely new capabilities and knowledge to understand the
emerging new operating models in the supply chain. Today, organisations
are trying to face these challenges with the shortage of business
and technology skills and an ever-increasing scarcity of talent.
N
R Narayana Murthy, chairman and chief mentor, Infosys Technologies,
said, Todays competitive environment calls for innovation
and global competitiveness from IT professionals. They should move
up the value chain from being called mere technocrats to versatile
techno business analysts. IT professionals must strive hard to acquire
business domain skills. They must also learn to communicate in various
foreign languages and improve their ability in English. In this
context, I endorse the efforts of the Computer Society of India
in launching a distance education programme, coupled with personal
counseling and projects for SCM/Logistics.
Welcoming
the new CSI initiative to provide distance education, Ganesh Natarajan,
deputy chairman and managing director of Zensar Technologies said,
The future of education is e-learning and I am delighted that
CSI is at the forefront of this revolution. I am confident that
this initiative will open up new opportunities to individuals as
well as corporations, and build a better India.
Dependence
on technical skills alone will not be enough in the future to maintain
the leadership. IT professionals will require knowledge of business
domains such as manufacturing to build their consulting mindset.
CSIs distance education vision is a convergence of e-learning,
expert e-counselling and classroom interaction through CSIs
network of sixty-plus chapters. A professional equipped with domain
knowledge, communication skills and adequate technical knowledge
will truly lead the global IT movement, said Deepak Shikarpur,
executive director of CSI.
