The
Mumbai region final round of the First All-India IT Cricket Championship
was played recently at Western Railway Mahalakshmi Ground in the
city. Sponsored by Express Computer and managed by Weekend Sports,
the championship aims to bring out the cricketing talent of the
IT fraternity in the country. ACES ABN Amro won the Inter-Mumbai
final, defeating ICICI Infotech in a nail-biting finish. Damodar
from ICICI Infotech was declared the best player of the championship
for his outstanding batting performance.
The
championship is being conducted at an all-India level and is being
played in two stages. The regional rounds are being played at the
five major IT cities of India, namely Mumbai, Pune, Hyder-abad,
Bangalore and Delhi. The five winners of these regional rounds will
play for the All-India Trophy.
The
regional rounds are based on the format of the recently concluded
ICC World Cup 2003, with 14 teams participating in each. After the
league rounds, six top teams will move into the super six stage
followed by the knock-out rounds of semi- finals and finals. Since
all the players are non-professionals, the matches are of shorter
duration.
The
Mumbai region round was a great success. The teams which played
in the league rounds were: IBM
(two
teams), ICICI Infotech, Godrej Infotech, Hexaware Techno-logies
(two teams), ICICI One Source, ACES ABN Amro, Quinnox Consultancy
Services, Stantonchase Interna-tional, Kale Consult-ants, Zycus
Infotech, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young and WNS India.
The
other regional rounds will be played in the respective cities after
the monsoons this year. The IT companies in these cities can send
their participation forms to Weekend Sports or call 0-9821534411.
The All-India Finals will be played in Mumbai immediately after
the completion of the regional rounds.
