Loyalty pays

Vineet Nayar has been with the HCL Group for 18 long years. One of the pillars of the Group, He tells PUNITA JASROTIA PHUKAN why it pays to be loyal to one organisation

Vineet Nayar defies the typical career graph of an IT professional. He started his career with HCL Technologies, and 18 years later remains with the Group as one of its driving forces. In an era when job switching is believed to ensure success and faster career progression, Nayar proves to be an exception. Today the chief executive officer of HCL Comnet, he also holds the post of vice president in HCL Technologies.

Nayar is credited with having written the success story of HCL Comnet. Established almost a decade ago, today HCL Comnet is one of the better-known IT services company in India, with almost 700 employees and continues to pioneer new areas in the domain of IT services management.

A graduate in electronics engineering with a management degree from XLRI Jamshedpur, Nayar started his career with the HCL Group in 1985. Starting as a senior management trainee, Nayar has handled diverse national portfolios in sales and marketing with HCL Limited, for instance HCL Finance, HCL Investments and the HCL-HP venture. In his initial seven years with the company, Nayar was promoted five times, and in 1992, he was appointed as the general manager for Strategic Group Diversification. This later resulted in the creation of HCL Comnet, and in 1994 he was nominated as CEO of the company. According to him, the joy of creating something is ten times more than just doing a job.

It has however not been an easy journey. Since its inception, the company has gone through four phases of transitions—from satellite communications to e-security, network intelligence to remote management of networks. Firmly believing that change is a constant factor in life, Nayar has tried shaping the company accordingly. This has also been the reason why the company has a leadership position in each space.

Another factor which helped the company is its emphasis on ‘cost-effectiveness’. This has also served as a key driver for the company’s managed IT services offering, as this results in a 50 percent reduction in operational costs for a customer. For Nayar, one of the greatest achievements for the company is that since its inception, HCL Comnet has not lost even a single customer.

Nayar firmly believes that an organisation’s success lies with its people and hence the conviction to create a learning organisation. The purpose is to give way to fresh ideas and suggestions and new blood. “Unless we are building value and delivering to higher value segments, we will not be able to compete. Though at times, this may involve taking risks, but the organisation is ready for such ventures,” he says. The aim is to set up an organisation, which is not just task-driven but also initiative-driven.

Taking a cue from his experience, Nayar lays a special emphasis on giving young blood a chance. “It is amazing to see the kind of enthusiasm and spirit which these young professionals have to make a difference,” he adds.
