Energise yourself

“I am feeling so good. Really inspired and enthusiastic. Today, I am going to be right on target—going to hit the bull’s eye”… sounds like the “Most Wanted State of Being” for each one of us. Powered by such energy, one just cuts through the difficulties and naturally succeeds. The benefits of this state are universal. Whatever you take on, whether difficult or something you have been hesitant to take on for some time, things move forward. You feel good and people around you are inspired too.

Bubble or boon

The immediate concern is about how long will it last? Given the near ecstatic experience, one would like it to be a permanent feature. However, when the enthusiasm disappears, it happens instantly just like the bubble burst. Is it possible to be always inspired, enthusiastic and char-ged up with energy; produce superlative results; feel great and live happily ever after? Yes it is! Let’s see what it takes one to live at this level?

Locate the source

Let’s speculate. What infuses this energy? Sometimes we know and sometimes we don’t. For instance, often when everything is breaking down and you should be feeling in the dumps, you find yourself feeling kicked up and alive. You search for a reason and you don’t find one. At other times, we can see the connection between the happening and the experience of positive or negative energy.

The fundamental source is related to our expectations. Whenever your expectations are met, like finishing a task, job or project; receiving appreciation, reward, tangible or intangible; having positive thoughts, a brilliant idea; expressing yourself through words, painting, actions or another form, positive energy is generated.

The reverse is also true. The opposites like uncomplimentary communications, failure—negative thoughts generate negative energy and one feels down, off mood, bored, drained, lazy and withdrawn, etc. Extended over long periods, the downward movement could become unbearably painful.

As one goes through the day, one receives both positive and negative energy leading to ups and down and sometimes pushing one to extremes. The important thing to observe is that most of us, most of the time, seem to be “helpless observers.” When people are at the happy extreme, they celebrate and when at the painful extreme suffer and wait for it to pass.

The One-Two-Three strategy

To maintain high levels of energy, this is a powerful approach:

  • Give up the negative energies.
  • Multiply the positive energies.
  • Transform surroundings into a positive environment.

Besides our own thoughts, we respond to other communications, actions and ways of being. Also, events occurring around us impact our energies. The common misconception is that the inputs are negative or positive. Actually it is our response, generated as per our program, that is positive or negative. Consider a sentence “you are very clever”. This could be received as a complement or as an accusation for manipulation. The words are the same. Cancellation of a meeting could come across to you as good news because you did not want to get into an argument or as bad news because it is loss of an opportunity to get even with him. Either way it’s your response that determines the impact on your energy levels.

It is important to realise that irrespective of the source of inputs, the focal point is the same—“your response.” Simply put “if you can manage your response as always positive, your energy levels will always remain high.”

Step 1. Watch yourself: Don’t worry about the inputs. Just focus on the response. Is your experience positive or negative? If it’s positive, say “good good.” If negative, terminate it. The idea is to cut off the negative responses like getting upset, anger or whatever is causing the negative energy. Just like the film director says ‘cut’ and the scene is cut. The logic is simple. Your mind follows your instructions. If the response pops up again, repeat. This will stop the drain.

Step 2. Destroy the source: Negative energies are generated when the happening does not match the expectation. When a software release date, for instance, is not met, ‘the fact’ is you wanted to meet the deadline and it is not met. That it happened because others did not co-operate, I am not capable enough, the system always crashes near my deadlines, the time allotted was not enough, etc, are ‘stories’. These may be true but the thing is when you blame these reasons as responsible for failure to meet the deadline, you give away control. Results cannot occur unless you set aside the reasons and take charge. Because ‘the fact’ is that you took on to produce the result by managing actions as also the obstacles. The moment you separate ‘the fact’ from the ‘stories’ and take charge, you would have destroyed the source of negative energy. Instantly, you will be positively charged, experience power and will yearn for action.

Step 3. Get back on the destination path: Re-declare your commitment to play 100 percent for your goal. That you will find a way around the obstacles but will not give up. This action will put you back powerfully on the path to your destination.

Two years ago, when there was a crash in the IT Industry, I talked to hundreds of people who had lost their jobs. The fact was that each one wanted the pay package, perks and the stock options to continue to the upward spiral. What happened was ‘no job’. Big mismatch. Lots of ‘stories’ were loudly circulating. “Most unfair”…. “Act of

God”…“How can I get married, pay back loan on my house, I am finished”… “I did not hear people saying Okay this has happened. I am somehow going to get myself a job—maybe even better than before. I am not going to let these stories get me down.” The few that did, quickly moved on.

If you check your life for breakdowns, you will find that you too, perhaps unconsciously, went through the above steps. Generally people take time, sometimes days, weeks, months and years before separating the ‘stories’ from ‘the facts’, and getting back in action.

Now that you know it as technology you can go through the steps much earlier and save your self the suffering and be back in high-energy levels, not at mercy of circumstances but by strategic actions.

Positive energy generator

Become a positive energy generator. This will require certain habits to be cultivated. These may not be new but these guarantee success. If you know them and did not implement so far. Now is the time. Consciously, try for a month and these will get internalised as habits.

  • Tell the truth—do what you say and say what you do: This is most important. Most people use nice reasons to justify the lies. Successful people learn how to tell the truth without hurting people. It takes some effort to practice.

Truth multiplies the energy and you experience freedom and enjoy aliveness. You have experienced it and don’t need any proof. Unfortunately, people ignore the fact that when one tells lies, the listener knows it’s a lie so there is no gain, only drain.

  • Bad mouthing people behind their back will only damage you not them. When we tolerate, we begin to lose enthusiasm. Sooner or later we burst out—generally onto the wrong person.

Use your generosity. Be a King or a Queen and forgive people, not because their actions deserve forgiveness but because you are generous and kind hearted. In the process you will keep bouncing back to positivity.

  • Appreciation does not cost: Be generous with yourself and others. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. There is always something to appreciate—at least the good intentions. Use your creativity to interpret everything positively.
  • Create a positive ambience: Music, photographs, quotes, mementoes signifying wins.
  • Support others to be positive: Avoid negative people. It’s not worthwhile to show your bravado “it does not make any difference to me.” It will drain you. Just keep away.

The basic fundamental is—Speak positive. Act positive. Be positive.

Enjoy energising yourself, rather than waiting for circumstances to boost you. Keep sharing. In the next episode, we work on “addressing anger.”
